This 24 day Everest and Kala Pattar Trek pass through the some of the most magnificent mountain scenery on earth. The view of Mount Everest from Tengboche Monastery is without equal. From Everest Base camp we meet many summit expeditions, but we cant actually see the summit, which is the reason it includes a climb up nearby Kala Pattar, from where we get and excellent view of the peak.
The trek to Everest Base camp starting from Jiri has many advantages over the traditional Everest Base Camp trek starting from Jiri Perhaps that is the reason Sir Edmund Hillary and TenzingNorge followed this trek on their first summit of Mount Everest in 1952. Starting at low-lying Jiri, 2000m, and descending even further to Kinja, 1100m, the trail passes through a number of ascents and descents which provide excellent acclimatization for the highest point of the trek, Kala Pattar, 5545m. This means that there is absolutely no risk of altitude sickness.
The wide altitude range while trekking from Jiri to Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar also means that you experience a vast variety of vegetation, culture and scenery. Beginning in lush, fertile lowlands and passing through rhododendron and pine forests, the trail finally goes beyond the tree line altogether. In the lower lands the indigenous farmers grow rice and other crops for their livelihood. At higher altitudes the population is primarily Sherpa; they follow the ancient Tibetan Nyingma Pa Buddhism and worship Mount Everest as the mother goddess of the universe. They were traditionally traders, traversing the rugged mountains between Tibet and Nepal with yak herds, but these days they can no longer trade: a seasonal income from the trekking industry is their main income source.
On the first part of the trail Jiri to Namche there are not so many trekkers. The Lamjura Pass, 3500m, high above the Solu valley, provides acclimatization as well as the first of many breathtaking views of Mount Everest. One week later at Namche Bazaar, we are finally on the Traditional Everest Base Camp trail, and, during the peak season, meet many mountaineering expeditions and trekkers and Sherpa guides. Going deeper into the Khumbu Valley there are awesome views of Mount Everest. On the way to EBC we get an excellent view of the Khumbu Glacier icefall; the ice appears to spring from the head of the Khumbu valley.
The natural environment of the Everest Region has been historically protected by its Buddhist inhabitants. Additionally it is enclosed in the Sagarmatha National Park, with laws to protect the environment and wildlife such as musk deer, the impeyan pheasant and many more native species.
