Helambu Valley Trek

The Helambu Village trail is a 7 day trek through two different national parks-Langtang and Shivapuri National Park. Many trekkers choose this trek as it begins at Sundarijal, only 12km away from downtown Kathmandu, yet is away from the crowded trekking areas. People of all ages who enjoy the outdoors can enjoy this trail as it is not too demanding. The village guesthouses in the ethnic villages give a taste of the local culture and provide a comfortable stay. In the beautiful Helambu village, which is surrounded by apple orchards, you will experience a mix of Sherpa, Tamang and Lama Cultures and see the ancient monasteries.

Other interesting villages along the way are the Sherpa towns of MelamchiGaon and Tarkeghyang. Tarkeghyang means 100 horses. Long ago, the King of Kathmandu, Kantipur, called on a Buddhist Lama, to stop an epidemic. The Lama asked for 100 horses as a reward, and the King gave him the horses. When this Lama built a temple in 1727, he called it Tarkeghyang. The local temple was rebuilt in 1969, designed in the Bhutanese style. The trek ends at MelamchiBazzar.

Weather on the Helambutrek:Trekking in the Helambu region is possible year round; however the best times to trek are in spring, from March to end of May, and autumn, from the beginning of September to end of November. The landscape bursts into bloom in April and early May when the rhododendron trees blossom. The views in the autumn, after the summer monsoons have cleared the atmosphere of dust, are splendid. The days are sunny and warm here all year round and the nights are above freezing. In winter it is a little colder, though still not freezing, but the summers can be very wet with slippery trails.

Fitness Requirements:We have categorized Helambu Village trekking as medium grade trek, suitable for passionate trekkers of all ages who have the stamina to walk at least 4-6 hours each day. We do recommend that you start a regular exercise regime some weeks prior to the trek to ensure you are in shape.
