The Everest Base Camp Trek is the classic Himalayan trek with incredible views of the giant peaks in the Khumbu region. This trek fulfills the dream of solo travelers and groups alike who want to experience the historic route to the base of the worlds highest mountain. Mount Everest, 8848m, is one of the worlds most awe-inspiring sights and an Everest Base Camp Trek is the perfect adventure!
Two highlights of this trek are reaching Everest Base Camp at the foot of the worlds highest peak and the nearby peak of Kala Pattar, 5545m. At Everest Base Camp, you will realize you have already accomplished something great to reach there, and it will be almost unbelievable to see the mountaineers of the Everest Expedition who are setting out for the summit far above. Due to the structure of Everest, you cannot actually see the summit from Base Camp. This is what makes Kala Pattar the second highlight of this trek. From here, you can get unequalled views of the summit of Mount Everest, Lhotse, 8516 m, Nupste, 7855m, the south face of Pumori, 7161 m, as well as the cascading Khumbu Glacier below. Youll see these mighty peaks from many vantage points throughout this trek. A 35 minute flight from Kathmandu takes you to Lukla, from where your Classic Everest Base Camp trek begins. The trail follows the Dudh Kosi, which in Nepali translates to River of Milk. Bright prayer flags are strung from high places all along the trail which climbs gradually upwards through forests of rhododendron and magnolia. To allow for acclimatization, rest days are scheduled at the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, and at Dingboche village, from where you can look up at the spectacular peak of Ama Dablam. The dramatic landscape around you changes every day as you trek along the Classic Everest Base Camp trail.
Our itinerary is carefully designed to allow rest days for acclimatization, which not only avoids altitude complications but also provides time to enjoy the scenery and visit a number of monasteries while we ascend through quaint Sherpa villages. As we climb higher and higher, the temperature drops. By the time we reach the pastures of Lobuche, youll be walking among frozen rivers in an icy wilderness.
The Classic Everest Base Camp Trek is rich in wildlife. The national bird of Nepal, the iridescent Dhaphe can frequently be seen and heard in the quiet forests of the Khumbu. Huge vultures, yellow billed choughs and black ravens soar on the up-draughts. The rare musk deer, tahr and goral also inhabit these high slopes.
When you return to Lukla, you will marvel at what you have achieved and the incredible things you have seen!
