This one day tour is ideal for tourists who have an extra day in Kathmandu at the beginning or end of their itinerary. Introducing Patan - Patan is an excellent choice for a full day trip. Not far from Kathmandu, separated by the Baghmati river, Patan is often referred to by locals by its Newari name, 'Yala' or even its Sanskrit name, 'Lalitpur' which means 'city of beauty'. Patan certainly is full of beauty; the Durbar square holds the greatest concentration of Newari architecture than anywhere else in the valley. Surrounding the square, in the fascinating backstreets, alive with colour and daily life, are more than 600 stupas. It is possible to spend the night in Patan. Yet because of its proximity to Kathmandu, it isn't necessary. Just make sure you arrive early so you have the town to yourself.

Introducing Bhaktapur - Bhaktapur, after Patan, is the third largest city in the valley. Also known as Bhadgaon, meaning 'City of Rice' in Nepali, or Khwopa 'City of Devotees' in Newari, the town is traditionally intact - enough to make you feel you've entered a timeless world. Traffic free cobbled streets link temples, courtyards, squares, wells and courtyards. Tradition is alive in Bhaktapur; the town is home to communities of craftsmen who continue the century old arts of pottery and wood carving. The absence of traffic makes Bhaktapur a truly pleasant experience. The old way of life can be seen on every corner of the town - rice being sun dried, collecting water from communal taps - there's plenty to see in Bhaktapur.
